Stainless steel works, but soapstone better. At least for drinks. Ice is definitely the best at making things cold.

Since the smoke is in the chamber for such a short time I would still use ice. Alternatives such as stainless steel and ~~sandstone~~ soapstone work best when sitting in the drink for awhile and the main advantage is to not have watered down alcohol.
