I haven't heard it, but I wouldn't be surprised if the answer is yes. You'll get more stereo separation, for one thing, and I wouldn't be surprised if you get better low end response out of two midsized floorstanders. The biggest benefit for something like that is space. If you're willing to set aside floor space for the speakers and shelf space for the receiver, a soundbar makes compromises for a benefit you don't need.
I have a soundbar, and can confirm that it sounds awesome. I know your budget is under 200, but I think I spent around $220.

Or buy a soundbar with a wireless subwoofer and REALLY get a great experience for under $200 with minimal wires and easy setup. That's what I did.
Don't let audio nazis fool you - in the right room, you only need a soundbar. Of course there are better systems, but they are not for the average consumer.

Sorry to unearth this oldass comment. I have a question about sound bars. I have an old Creative 2.1 speaker set hooked up to my TV (this set: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-I-Trigue-Speaker-System-Black/dp/B0002SQ2MA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top). I was thinking about this Sony soundbar to replace it, mainly because my girlfriend hates having to get up to change the volume, but I guess that'd probably be a bad idea based on what I'm reading here! That soundbar got pretty good reviews from CNET, so I thought it'd be worth the money. If I was going to switch to a 2.0 or 2.1 setup, how much would I have to spend to get something better than what I have now?
