Pretty sure it is market distortion caused by pricing algorithms.
Most of these cameras are obsolete, have been discontinued and there are only a few of them left in stock.
Because they have "fallen off the radar screen", there is no manufacturer-directed discounting, and the last few units are usually posted at full list price and sit in inventory for months, if not years.
Often, right below the ridiculously high price set by the algorithms, is a used price that more accurately reflects market reality.
This happens to all cameras, not just old CCD HDV camcorders.
Here are a couple of examples:
If you want a modern camera that is "made for video" with camcorder ergonomics, a power zoom and XLR inputs - you don't have to pay an inflated price for an old HDV camera - there are manufacturer-directed markdowns on large-sensor, interchangeable lens SDXC camcorders that have not yet been discontinued - e.g. the [$2299 Sony NEX-EA50 with the 18-200 power zoom] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009GKRQF2/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B009GKRQF2&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20) and the [$2499 Sony NEX-FS100 (body only)] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00796NCY4/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00796NCY4&linkCode=as2&tag=battleforthew-20).
I don't see a lot of people buying old tape-based museum pieces at full retail, no matter how nice their white balance controls are.
wasn't the AF100 sensor the same one in the GH2? with a new Fs100 being as low as $1,500 in some places and blowing this thing out of the water in every way, B&H is gonna need to do a little bit more to get rid of their backstock of AF100's
