The course I took was very lecture focused. The lecturer in question was a fantastic guy named Paul Arthur, he's written several books and I've been thinking of dipping into this one to refresh my memory on the subject: https://www.amazon.com/Special-Relationships-Britain-Ireland-Northern/dp/0856406880

But TBH if you want to be a good Irish American I would focus on the colonial history and the cultural history, as well as the stuff your family was involved in when they came over here (my family for instance did cool prohibition crimes). The Troubles are a fascinating subject, but I think the specific nationalistic and socioeconomic issues extant in the Troubles and the peace process leading up to the Good Friday agreement extend beyond something that only concerns people 'from' that region, and is something worth studying for anyone interested in politics or diplomacy.
