Depends on kind of shrimp you will be keeping. There are large shrimp and dwarf shrimp, whose newborns are less than 1 mm thick (1/64") and around 3 mm (1/8") long, they pass even through coarse sponge prefilter.
Fine sponge should be available in any aquariums store, selling filters, or stainless steel mesh cylinder, but make sure that it diameter of the filter tube. No kidding. I had placed some netting over the intake which I assumed had fixed the issue yet here we are again. I’ve wrapped it completely now with a slender coarse sponge.

Your best bet would to be use something like this sponge filter as it not only will prevent inadvertent fish chumming, but will also act as a second media for beneficial bacteria to grow.
If that is either too much of an eyesore or it inhibits your flow too much, use a mesh screen like this to prevent Khuli sushi.
Also, sorry for your loss, Khulis are sweeties! Try Zebra Botia (Loaches) as well, they're great for small tanks and click extremely loudly when excited!
