You might be surprised! I just upgraded, but I was running triple-screen on SLI 560's. I wasn't getting 120FPS, and it wasn't going to play Metro on full settings, but most games handled just fine with only minimal tweaking. Some games I played with full graphical settings and resolution (Dishonored comes to mind).

You can turn down the resolution to a smaller triple-screen one and you won't notice much of a difference. Also since everything is so big, AA isn't as much of an issue and you can turn that way down or off altogether. Just trust me on this one - as long as you have the three monitors and a card that supports it, just give it a try. Even if you have to sacrifice a little bit of shiny, the experience is worth it. You'll never go back.

It depends. I'm not entirely sure about all the 6-series (specifically your higher-end one). I just installed a 650 in a friends computer, the third monitor just needed a mini-HDMI to HDMI adapter (which the card didn't come with). With my 780, I have four ports - mini-HDMI, DisplayPort, and two DVI. For that, you need to use the DisplayPort for the third monitor for Surround, otherwise it doesn't matter. Mine came with the mini-HDMI adapter, that may depend on the OEM who makes the card.

So bottom line, if you have two DVI and a mini-HDMI, all you'll need is a mini-HDMI adapter which might even come with the card (and maybe a HDMI to DVI adapter too). If there are four ports, you need an active DisplayPort adapter. The 5-series cards do not support three monitors on one card despite having three outputs.

The cable you have there is 'passive' in that it is leaving the signal as it is and just passing it along. The problem with that is the graphics card can then see it is connected to a HDMI/DVI display and sends a compatible signal automatically. That would be great if it was the only display, but it takes up one of your HDMI/DVI 'slots'. So really it's not working as a DisplayPort at all, it's more like HDMI to DP to HDMI.

If you use an 'active' adapter, the card sees it as a DisplayPort device, and sends a DP compatible signal - the adapter then does the conversion to HDMI/DVI signal format for your screen. This leaves your 2 HDMI/DVI 'slots' free to work through the actual HDMI/DVI ports.

The active adapters are more expensive than passive because they have a chipset in them that's converting the signal - and your mileage may vary on things like HDCP, max resolution etc.

You will need an ACTIVE Display Port adapter to get your 144hz from the DVI to cross over. These from what I'm reading can be pricey (I'm finding anywhere from $40 to $140).

I had this same problem. A fresh installation of windows fixed it for me.

On the other hand, the problem is most likely the converters you are using. They are known to cause issues. If a fresh windows installation doesn’t fix it, I recommend buying an active converter like this one. Read the description on the page for more info.

You need an active displayport to DVI adapter. That DP to DVI cable is passive and won't work, the first helpful review also says so.

Now I'm running 3 LG 23" (Scored them on sale, they were last years model) with the same i5 processor as you. So far I have been running Skyrim, Crysis, and Half life 2 (Not the most demanding games) all on Max. Hope this helps!

Yah, if you use display ports you need an active converter if you are going to dvi. I purchased this one and it has been working with no problems, they seem to average about $30. I would assume mini-display port is the same.

All my stuff is here and plugged up, this kinda cheapo adapter is working fine currently. No real DRM issues seems like, no random turning off or green or anything when streaming. Thanks for your help again! Just thought I'd leave a note for anyone who may be having the same issue and find this.

I guess you could call this a success story, not with that GPU though. I got 4 monitors running from a GTX660 and a GT640 last year, and have been running it ever since without issues. I helped another redditor get a similar setup running 6-8 months ago, and just the other day he sent me a followup message saying that he upgraded to Maverick, and now has all 4 of his monitors running from a single GTX670 with no special settings (before Maverick he had been running the GTX670 with a GT610, I believe, but now he doesn't need the 610). I think I'm going to try upgrading to Maverick this weekend if I have some spare time, to see if I can get all 4 running from the GTX660.

EDIT: Update for anyone who cares. I upgraded to 10.9.2 tonight, and I now have all four of my monitors running from my GTX660. Two via DVI, one via HDMI-to-DVI adapter, one via Displayport-to-DVI adapter (side note: not sure if it matters or not, but it's an active Displayport adapter.)

This is the adapter i have so i guess it would be a possibility that its just cheap and faulty. i know i need an active display port adapter. do you have a trustworthy brand to buy? i do not see the plus' you're talking about on the cable. there is the D looking sign that is in the picture you linked but no plus' to be found. thank you for the help so far

I just got an active Display port to DVI adapter for my monitor because My graphics card only has Display Port and HDMI and my Monitor has VGA HDMI and DVI. My old PC had a graphics card that had DVI so I could get 144hz on my monitor no problem but HDMI doesn't allow it. I plug the Display port to DVI into my computer and monitor and try upping the refresh rate, I'm able to do it but something pops up on my monitor saying "incorrect cable please use the dvi dual-link that came with your monitor" I have the Acer GN246HL monitor and GTX 1660Ti graphics card

I believe you need an Active DisplayPort adapter. They're required if you want to use a combo of any 3+ dvi/HDMI combos.

Yep, if I were you, I would connect to my TV over HDMI since that will give you audio and video.

Connect to one of the monitors over DVI.

Connect the second monitor over Displayport. If your monitor does not have a displayport, you will need to use an active displayport to DVI adaptor. Be careful, passive adaptors are cheaper but will not work in your case.

that is not an active adapter, that is a passive one, which is passing analog signals thru, which is why its not working. this is an active converter. Unless it says its an active converter in the name, its a passive converter.

I use this one at work for a 1080 monitor at 60hz. You can possibly get a
HDMI to DVI-D for cheap and then hopefully free you up to use a DP monitor in the future.
