Try Sulfodene for dogs. It works really well and is very cheap. It's easy to find. My local grocery store carries in in the pet section; I am sure Wal-mart does as well. You definitely can get it at Petco and Petsmart.

Here is the link from Amazon:Sulfodene

We always just applied with a Q-tip or cotton swap depending on the spots. You don't need to shave the area, regardless of what it says. We've used it on our dogs for over 10 years.

It works very quickly.

I just saw this thread, but have you tried sulfodene? One of our shih tzus used to get bad hot spots, and it really helped him out. It soothed his itching so he didn't worry at them anymore, and it helped to heal the spots (which were absolutely terrible;, they were these awful angry, crusty, red, oozing sores).

This is the brand I used, and you can apply it directly with a cotton ball or something, but I put it in a little spray bottle.
