Not a vet so I can't comment to your original question, but! If twice daily feedings are important to you still, I have this feeder and I love it! I don't see anything wrong with three meals a day, that's what I do. One of my cats do start meowing about an hour before their feeding times though, that's something I haven't managed to figure out yet. I've been eyeing this feeder (http://www.amazon.com/Super-Feeder-Automatic-Digital-Capacity/dp/B005PZ0HQM/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&qid=1371163012&sr=8-16) but alas I'd need two and it's a lot to spend at once. I hear it's capable of very small precise portions, which would be essential for more meals over the course of the day.
Also, I don't know that there ought to be a consensus on how much for you to feed, it would depend on the size and activity level and food. My cats are 10 and 12 pounds respectively, and don't do much; I feed them each about five tablespoons, or roughly a third of a cup of high-protein dry food. I figured this amount out by setting a target weight with the vet and adding or reducing food to reach that weight. Also, not 100% sure from the picture, but your kitty looks like he could still be a growing boy!
Get an automatic cat feeder! Won't necessarily help with the feet thing, but when it becomes 100% food obsessed as all cats do an automatic feeder for the mornings will be a blessing.
