No we need better training and better support. There are a reason these kids are having behaviors. Many times these behaviors can be lessened, if they are addressed properly. Frankly, mod/severe is a contact sport. Anyone who tells you different is lying to you. If you don't have scars you can't say you've worked mod/severe.

edited to say, I've been left alone in the room in a non-public for kids with severe behavior issues due to autism for 15 or so minutes. I had my kids down though. I had them involved in their activities. I had a few try to escalate, but I knew exactly how to get them de-escalated before it even became an issue. I kept anything sharp locked up and nobody used scissors at all. When my staff worked with kids who felt like scratching they wore Kevlar sleeves and I bought a pair of hexarmor sleeves for my kiddo who liked to gouge skin out and my other kid who liked to bite. I've only had one workman's comp injury and it is because the kid liked me and doesn't know his own strength. He wanted a sticker out of my desk and I told him not now. The aide in the room didn't intervene and I had to radio for help. He bent my thumb back to the point where it almost broke. When someone came in they yelled at him to stop and grabbed his wrist, he stopped and patted my head. He ran out of the room because he thought he was in trouble. I went and talked to him and let him touch my finger (that hurt like hell) to show him it was okay. Then said, "First classroom, then sticker." He went back to class and then got a sticker.
