Cancel cable, keep the DVR: Watch, pause, and record live antenna TV. Browse upcoming shows, schedule and manage recordings. Skip commercials, fast-forward and rewind recordings.Whole-home networked DVR: Tablo has no HDMI connection. It connects to your router instead of your TV to let you browse, record, and stream live over-the-air (OTA) TV to any device, anytime, anywhere. (Out-of-home streaming requires an active Tablo guide data subscription, optional, sold separately).Dual-band AC Wi-Fi included: The only OTA DVR with Wi-Fi, Tablo lets you position the DVR and TV antenna for the best OTA TV signal reception. (TV antenna required, sold separately).Enjoy your favorite network TV channels via Tablo apps on your iOS & Android mobile devices, computers, Smart TVs, streaming media & gaming devices, incl. Roku, Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, NVIDIA SHIELD TV, and Xbox.Flexible USB Storage: Connect as much recording capacity as you want, up to 8TB (USB hard drive required to store recordings and play multiple live streams simultaneously. Sold separately).
I now get full local DVR and cable channel DVR on my FireTV and all I have to do is swap apps. Tablo even lets you stream recordings outside of the home using UPnP or you can open the ports on your router. (Outside streaming uses a tuner/encoder so I recommend the 4-tuner unit)
What I did was purchase a refurbished 4-Tuner off Amazon. It comes directly from Tablo in good condition and it's the same price of the 2-Tuner retail unit. You have to pay for shipping but for me I didn't have to pay tax so it evened out. Then I went to Costco and picked up a 2TB HD for $80. You do have to pay for guide data and I went with the $49.99 yearly plain as I don't want to invest in the live time subscription ($149.99) at this point.

Yeah as others have obviously pointed out it is spun in the best interest of Tablo.
The true upfront cost is definitely higher with Tablo. In the given scenario if you required multiroom streaming (2 devices) + remote access (stream) then yes going with Tablo may save you money in the long run. However, IMO Tivo still probably provides a much better and reliable service overall and has a long established name in the industry to back it up.
For most new or average cord cutters, I highly question how much does multi-room / remote streaming appeal to them. I can see multi-room being more of a desire but for this you just need a Tivo Mini w/o the Stream.
How about a comparison of true upfront cost to a basic cord cutter?

I think Tablo definitely needs to adjust it's price model on their lines in order to stay competitive. The new price change and lifetime model by Tivo completely changes the playing field for cord cutters.
I personally as a consumer wouldn't consider a Tablo unless the price was $350 for 4-Tuner with Lifetime (even at this price keep in mind for 1 TV, it costs more after adding hard drive and streaming device vs Tivo).
I know before the permanent price change, Tivo used to do limited offer sales on their products where they include the lifetime with the device for a discounted price. I mean you could do the same sale model. Regular price $300 Tablo 4-Tuner. Sale $250 Tablo 4-Tuner, save extra $350 Tablo 4-Tuner w/ Lifetime included. etc. etc.
