This one :) I decided to cut corners on this one aspect and go ahead and buy the waterfall. I wanted a filter and waterfall in one, so it's a great option.

Not sure how helpful I can be, but I'll give you whatever information I can about what works for my red eared slider. He's about ten years old. The tank is maybe about 4'x2', not sure exactly. At some point we'd like to get a larger one for him, but he's pretty content right now. I use a corner filter to conserve space (Something like this, there should be an option at pretty much any pet store). It keeps his environment mostly clean and I do a deeper clean every month or so where I take him out and wash everything in his tank.

I also have a water heater, it's a little tube that sits in the water and turns on in case it gets too cold. This is important in my area because we have cold winters, but it may not be essential for you. (This isn't the model I have, but something like this might do)

I also have a few large rocks in the bottom of his tank that I switch up whenever I clean just to change his environment a little and give him something new to look at.

Something that I found to be important is having a basking light and a UV light for him, because he's indoors and while he's near a window, it's not enough light for him, especially in winter. I have those set up on a timer so I don't have to remember to turn it on and off every day.

Speaking of basking light, he will need a place that is not in water where he can sit under the light. I used to have a floating island wall attachment for this, but he kept knocking it down, so now I just have two of those filters from above, back to back, and he likes sitting on them. You'll find out what your turtle likes and doesn't like as time goes on. It may be a little expensive getting his/her tank together, but it'll be worth it definitely to have the filters to keep it clean and the lights on timers so his daily upkeep is fairly simple. Sorry I don't have pictures of my set up on hand, I hope you can at least use some of this info!

To the naysayers:

I wouldn't be so quick to judge on the product as a filter. I had two of these running in my 40g breeder for over a year and they did just fine.

My only real issue was that the filters had to be above the water level so the waste that settled on the bottom needed to be kicked up/vacuumed a bit more regularly. I am thinking about getting a water circulator to create a current that will help kick up the settled waste to closer proximity of the pumps.

I say I had two of them because I recently upgraded to a 55g and now have one of the old tetra reptofilters I linked above and this guy that came free with rebate for a 55g.

I am going to attempt to switch out the pumps between the old tetra reptofilter that is in my 40g with some fish with the one in the decorative reptofilter to see if I can't up the GPH in the 55 since it only does 80GPH as opposed to 125GPH like the reptofilters get. That way the 40g breeder with just fish runs at 80GPH and my 55gallon has a combined 250GPH...if any of that makes sense. All I am getting at is you have options. They may be uglier, they aren't ideal, they do occupy some room in the aquarium... But they do the job. Perhaps no on par with your average canister but when a canister is not an option you just have to make due with what you can manage.

Edit

So I pulled out a 125GPH pump from one of my old Tetra Reptofilters [linked above] and am using it along with the 80GPH pump in the Decorative Reptofilter for now. We will see how it goes. But the Decorative filter which is technically rated for 55g is now a total of 205GPH. The 80GPH pump wasn't going to easily fit in the old large tetra reptofilter so I just have the empty casing waiting for repurposing for now. That means the 40g breeder is going to get to keep one in tact 125GHP reptofilter for my fish and Georgie doesn't have a gaudy filter and is rocking a neat water fall dual pump filter! Yay!
