I feel this book helps a lot with weaning off SSRIs and SNRIs. Effexor is similar to Cymbalta, which I'm taking. It's best to go slowly, 10% less each time.

If you haven't read this book about tapering you should: https://www.amazon.com/Antidepressant-Solution-Step-Step-Overcoming/dp/074326973X

When I was tapering, very slowly, I really got nuts at times. I think the answer is about being self aware, which you clearly are because you are talking about it here. I had a kind of an epic freakout about my house keys with my wife; and I was like what is wrong with me? Then I realized that it was the change in meds

I know that I am late to this, but I would like to mention that SSRI withdrawal (sorry, "Serotonin syndrome" because SSRI is defined to be non-addictive, it cannot have withdrawal problems either) symptoms do look very much like symptoms of untreated depression. On top of that, the doctors don't seem to be aware of the withdrawal at all, probably mostly because of the lack of industry funded research on the issue (weird, huh?) I was on SSRI and getting off was a long process with tapering down every 3rd week and being grumpy, depressed and miserable for a week or so after the change. I would suggest Glenmuller's books (I think there is an UK and US version) for the process if your husband ever plans to try again. Stopping cold turkey can cause real trouble, so I hope he didn't do that.

Sorry for going off tangent, but I had to educate myself reading peer support forums to get off my own drugs because the only industry-accepted truth is that you never get better, you're broken, here's a pill. And yup, I'm still pissed.
