She sounds like my lab/boxer Brody. He's one of the most reliable obedient dogs on the planet but his brain tends to disappear when food or bodies of water come into his universe. haha!

Don't worry, I would never advocate hitting a dog! That's not my style at all. What I would recommend for counter surfing depends on what you're willing to do as far as management goes and how much time you are willing to put into training. Some families are fine with putting up a baby gate to restrict access to the kitchen when they're not home. Some want a quick fix so we'll set up a booby trap (two cookie sheets on the edge of the counter with a valuable treat behind the counter) so when the dog puts his paws on the counter, the cookie sheets will fall and scare the dog away. They won't want to try that again anytime soon! Others are willing to put the time and effort into boundary training. This is how I dealt with it with my dog. I used a device called "the cat caller" (http://www.amazon.com/The-Cat-Caller-Remote-Receiver/dp/B004OJRAHO/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1372971261&sr=1-1) to let him know when he was doing something wrong. Whenever he tried to enter the kitchen, I pushed the button on the cat caller which only beeps, no shock or vibration, took his collar and led him to his bed. After a while, he only needed the beep to leave the kitchen on his own. It's important in this phase to not allow access to the kitchen when you aren't home. Then I started to leave him alone with the cat caller on and watched through the kitchen window to see if he would try to enter the kitchen when I wasn't home. When he did, I beeped the cat caller and he returned to his bed. I had to do this 4 or 5 times before he simply stopped trying to go in there when he was left alone. He hasn't counter-surfed in a year!
