Glen Canyon was almost lost during severe flooding in 1983. That would have caused a failure downstream at Hoover so you can imagine how catastrophic it would have been. Also, The Emerald Mile: The Epic Story of the Fastest Ride in History Through the Heart of the Grand Canyon is an awesome book that goes into a lot of details about the dam's history and the events surround the 1983 flood.

I loved rafting down the Grand Canyon. If you would like to get an idea of what it's like from an avid boatman's perspective, as well as learn a ton of history about the Grand Canyon, I highly recommend the book "The Emerald Mile."
