You can do a lot worse than working your way through the IMDb Top 250. I made my way through that list a few years ago when I was having difficulty finding good stuff to watch, lots of excellent stuff. Another list I would suggest is Roger Ebert's Great Movies. His first Great Movies book is an excellent reference and the sequel is good, too.

Funny, passionate, accessible. You don't need to know anything historical or technical or have read or seen anything else. Just a well-spoken man who loves movies talking about the movies he loves.
