I haven't paid attention to celebrity gossip since I read The Mirror Effect which details the many ways celebrity narcissism affects society.

Here's the study the book is based on, but it's behind a pay wall:

The book:

> As Pinsky and Young show in The Mirror Effect, however, such behavior actually points to a wide-ranging psychological dysfunction among celebrities that may be spreading to the culture at large: the condition known as narcissism. [...] They discovered that a high proportion of stars suffer from traits associated with clinical narcissism—including vanity, exhibitionism, entitlement, exploitativeness, self-sufficiency, authority, and superiority.

Edit: To elaborate, my opinion and my feeling of how that shit affects me is that it encourages my narcissistic tendencies and stands in the way of growing as a person, internalizing events in my life, and growing more compassionate. It's bad for me. It hurts my brain. I stay away from it

Because we live in a glowingly narcissistic culture of "look how awesome I am!" Every aspiring "someday famous" person needs constant attention and fuel for that attention. Moments like these provide the fuel, their twitter/instagram/snapchat accounts provide the vehicle.
