The Outsiders would be a good choice. I also really like this Paul Zindel book, Pardon Me, You're Stepping on my Eyeball that had some really intense drugs/abuse/etc themes. I actually re-read it a few times in my 20s. The Bell Jar would also appeal to her, I'd bet. Those are my picks.
A few books read when i was younger are Soldier Boys, Of Mice and Men, and The Outsiders.
