You might like to read this thing I wrote. There was a great discussion in the comments as well, if you feel like I'm pushing against the Austrian agenda too much.

The classics that people are recommending are great, but I would be wary of thinking that you understand modern economics by reading books written for the public--that sounds a little elitist, but I'm afraid I think it's the truth. If you want a broader picture of what modern economics is about try this book. It's good at making you realize how little of economics is the macro stuff you see in the news (and on the econ subreddits).

I'm trying to think of books written for non-economists that actually have all the math in them...but I'm drawing a blank. Maybe that's a niche I'll fill many years down the road. I could recommend textbooks or papers that will show you the math, but those are going to be pretty jargon-heavy...

Edit: Also, this is a pretty good reading list.
