I would suggest "The Twilight of American Culture" by Morris Berman. It is full of vignettes and wisdom and hope for the average American who is dissatisfied with life and empty consumerism.

Reading Limits to Growth, E.F. Schumacher, and listening to The Extraenvironmentalist.

I really like reading Morris Berman. He wrote a trilogy on human consciousness, then a trilogy on the American empire. Robert Bellah is another good writer.

For me the biggest thing was learning that technology cannot solve everything, and that we're only decades from collapse. I also learned just how bad our environmental problems are, and that climate change is just part of it.

At first I thought becoming some kind of activist progressive was the right idea, but then I quickly moved away from that. Now I'm more of a radical and I'm not looking for solutions to the problem. I got to this point after reading many books on the topics of social and environmental collapse.

Agreed re: Gingrich, but you also have to account for the Democratic Party abandoning labor unions, which began in the 70s-80s and accelerated under Clinton with the signing of NAFTA. I think we're just now seeing an even greater acceleration of a decline that's been in process for decades already.

I'm a bit skeptical on the thesis of The Fourth Turning - I don't think that history is necessarily predictably cyclical. That said, if you like prophetic broad strokes, check out some of Morris Berman's books, such as The Twilight of American Culture and Dark Ages America: The Final Phase of Empire.

The Twilight of American Culture - Morris Berman
Incredible book and way ahead of the curve in predicting a downfall of our financial system as well as highlighting our country's growing dependence on vacuous forms of entertainment and waning interest in academia, art and culture. The book is a well laid out cry of warning to anyone already concerned and distressed by the way things have been heading - and although it was written back in the 90's, it's just as relevant today.
