The vang: the military form

Very good straight up horror sci-fi. I didn't care too much for the sequels but the prequel Starhammer (though less horror-filled, it sets up a gritty universe) is also a great read and I think both books stand up to the test of time.

Mostly sci-fi here;

Alastair Reynolds' Diamond Dogs is a haunting little novella, and my favorite.

Peter F. Hamilton's The Night's Dawn trilogy is more sci-fi than horror, but it does horror often and well.

The Vang [sci-fi/horror], by Christopher Rowley: nasty, gritty, bleak, and beautiful.

I liked the buildup in King's The Tommyknockers, and The Jaunt [very short story from Skeleton Crew; might be possible to find it free online] is my pick for his most frightening work.

Cormac McCarthy: Child of God. Maybe not that scary, but I need to mention it somewhere on r/horror.

From 1988, but has a good shelf life: Christopher Rowley's The Vang: The Military Form. Author is better known for Starhammer, which I have not read. The Vang is/are a bioengineered plant/virus thing so inimical that the only defense is physical distance and vacuum: if your planet is infected, be sure to 1) nuke it from orbit, and 2) not have been on it.

One of the most horrific stories I've ever read is Killer for this scene:

[spoiler](/s "A Roman Centurion accidentally kills the alien's mate and child. Later in the book, the centurion and his family are falsely accused, so they are locked in cells in a prison. One night the alien shows up and lets itself into the cells of the centurion's wife and children, while the Centurion is stuck in another cell and can only watch...")

Christopher Rowley's The Vang: The Military Form is pure SF monster murder horror.

For a short story you could use the opening of Thirteen by Richard K Morgan.

For movies:

  • Alien
  • Event Horizon
  • The Thing (the 1980s version)
  • Jason X
