I had a big mouse issue and couldn't figure out where they got in. Once a few get into your attic or basement or whatever they leave a scent trail and bring their buddies. I gave up trapping them after snap trapping a dozen and my wife scared to go in the basement, and got a pro company contract for two years. No more mice. I moved to a new house and now do it myself, copying their protocol.

Strategy is outdoor baiting with commercial grade boxes. This prevents bigger animals from dragging bait into neighbors yards where it can kill pets. Also keeps curious kids out. Recommended box contains a concrete block to keep it in place, it weighs 10 pounds. Or it is bolted to your house. Weighted Box or Bolted Box that looks like a Telephone Service box. As a backup I keep these in my garage, but they're rarely touched. Don't buy cheap boxes - they get torn open and dragged around endangering kids and pets. Then keep fresh bait stocked in them every three months. They most important time is in the fall when they're looking for a warm place for the winter. I buy buckets of TomCat brand bait off Amazon, but see it for cheaper at my hardware store. Contrac and Final are pro product bait blocks I've also used, but only come in big $100+ buckets. You can buy smaller portions from people on eBay.

Absolutely correct. I live in the middle of a ~300acre wheat field a couple miles outside of town, in a 100+ year old farmhouse. Mice are just something you have to deal with.

Sealing up obvious entry points is first line of defense. Next, keep clean. Don't leave food out. Keep dry goods (beans, rice, flour) in sealed containers. We keep our bread in a breadbox.

Use bait stations. Use bait stations. I say it twice because they really do help. You probably want at least two, maybe four. Don't even screw with the little mouse ones the size of your hand, get the big ones for rats. A bucket of bait will probably last you a year or so, depending on how often you check & re-bait them. If you have a large or medium sized dog that likes to chew, make sure the dog can't access them, if they get determined enough they could chew it open. Cats are OK.

Every so often, you'll open a drawer or pick up a box in the pantry and find some mouse droppings or discover it's been chewed up. Don't panic, it happens, set traps. These style traps are the absolute best. Little dab of peanut butter in the reservoir and it's almost impossible to get the bait without setting them off. They last, too - I have some of these with dozens of kills on them. For best results, bait the traps but don't set them, leave for a few days, and re-bait as necessary. Mice get used to a free meal at the trap every day. Then, bait and set, snap! snap! snap! it'll be a mini mouse armageddon.

Oh man. It’s taken months.

I trapped two and relocated them about 3 miles away. But there were more. The traps stopped working and I was only catching squirrels until the squirrels wised up.

So I used an anticoagulant bait block to poison them and some gas bombs.

So the bait blocks with anti-coagulants, it doesn’t work. Most rodent-type animals have built up immunity. So they ate up the blocks but we were discovering new holes. So I gassed the minks like a chipmunk nazi. You stick the bombs in an active hole light the fuse, and bury it quickly. I was positive this killed a few.

2 weeks later new holes. “Fuck!” So I started reading up on the poison that wasn’t working and figured out that they were immune and bought a second generation poison. it has bromethalin. 2nd generation poison worked really well. In 3 weeks I found one new hole. Filled that hole with poison and I hit them with these guys which is a sound repellent..

Ever since I used 2nd gen poison and the sound repellent, I have not seen a new chipmunk hole and they have disappeared. But now the burrows are collapsing, my front walk way is broken, and someone will break an ankle running through my front yard. So it’s time to fix it, hence the dirt question.

Seriously, get rid of chipmunks as fast as you can. They will cause foundation issues if they burrow too close to your home. Gas the munks. Poison. Whatever you need to do.
