One possible cause that I've been told about is a condition I have called Crohn's Disease. A gastrointestinal issue that's more complicated than to go into here, but one of the problems that it causes me is internal bleeding. This causes me to have a much lower hemoglobin count as a healthy person should, which causes anemia, which has been shown to exacerbate RL. Fun, huh?
For relief, I take gabapentin every night about an hour before I go to bed. This is a prescription anticonvulsant medication that seems to help.
I've also found that if I put hot compresses on my legs for awhile after getting into bed, that helps quite a bit as well.
Another part of my night routine before bed is to drink a cup of herbal tea.
