Check out the happy light -- There are less expensive ones, but my friend has this one and I really enjoy the hue the light emits. I think it really can help with depression and SAD.

It could always be a placebo. If it's one like this one, nobody seems to know the distance you need to be for 10,000 lux, so most likely it's very close (6" or less).

And yeah, they are supposed to be obscenely bright. They have to trick your brain into thinking you're getting sunshine, after all!

If your light bulb doesn't die on you early on, this baby is a damn good way to start the day. Combine with a more high-lux (come on, spell check, lux is a standard unit) photon pump on your breakfast table like this and some decent workplace lighting, and you push through Skandinavian winter without even feeling much of the short days.

And it is probably not only the lack of morning light alone; staring at LED screens in late evening appears to dampen the build-up of melatonin (too lazy now, google yourself).

> Not sure if I recommend the fancy lamps. The one I got was $70 and whether it helped or not, it's pretty flimsy and feels like a bit of a rip-off.

Which one did you get? I got Happylight Deluxe for $149 and it made all the difference in the world. I hear you about the crap emotions, but this gave me a zing similar to real sunshine on a bright day. (I actually got it "free" through Airmiles, though.) I agree with you about the daylight bulbs in regular lamps. Excellent choice.

Sunlight stimulates melanocyte-forming hormone, which stimulates both libido and fat-burning, so no wonder it's hard to feel good and lose weight in winter in non-tropical climates.

We just bought a HappyLite for our place.

I spent close to 200 bucks on it, but my bf who suffers from SAD loves it so far. On Amazon in the states you can get it for around 150.
