It shouldn't hurt it. The soil will get slimy.
If you can get some moss, you can take the growing heads and place them on top of the soil (depending on the type of moss you have). Algae shouldn't grow on the live moss.
I was having the same problem with my Capesis. I ended up making a skirt out of this poly film commonly used when growing hydroponically. It sits on top of the dish. There is a hole cut out in the middle for the pot. This prevents the light from hitting the water, which prevents algae from growing.
