If he has a Vizio TV, pair it with a Vizio 5.1 soundbar. You can get a refurb for $150. My parents had this one for awhile, and it worked well for them.

• Where can you buy from (ie which Amazon if any): I go to college in NYC and don't have a car. Other than that I can buy from anywhere.

• How big of a space and how loud: medium sized basement. I live in a big room in a frat house (17'x17' and 3000 sqft) and want it to be loud.

• TLDR: Had a Vizio soundbar system but my subwoofer crapped out, and I can't replace it. If I can get something similar to that (in terms of sound quality and especially loudness), that would be perfect.
I rarely suggest sound bars,but I this this a case were a decent soundbar will do the trick. Vizio has very affordable an decent 5.1 set ups. Look into it. Do you want surround speakers? Even some of the less expensive Vizio soundbars have surrounds that hook up to the wireless subwoofer. I've got two older sets of Vizio bars (theater room and bedroom) and they sound fine for what they are. It's not gonna match your 7.1 components, but it is real 5.1 AC3/DTS so way better than TV speakers. Example 5.1, or without surrounds.
