Have you looked at the Vizio 5.1 systems? The rear speakers aren't totally wireless. They're connected via RCA cable to the sub, which connects to the bar via bluetooth. However, these can easily be hidden behind a couch and don't need to be strung along the side of the room. It also connects via optical.
For your needs and the how your room is setup, I recommend to just get a soundbar. Soundbar's are sleek and nice and for your room it would go perfect for it. The best part is the sub woofer is wireless so you can play around with it.

This is a really amazing soundbar you can get for this price. It's 5.1, it's sleek, and it has amazing sound. The subwoofer is wireless, and the rears hook up to the subwoofer so you dont have to have a long ass cord going to the soundbar.
If you just want a 2.1, you can go with this klipsch soundbar, it sounds great for the price:

Some soundbars have a wireless subwoofer that also powers the surround speakers. In other words, you could put the wireless sub in the rear of the room (or wherever the wires connect to the surrounds) and plug your pre-wired speakers into the sub. This is what I did with a Vizio system. The Nakamichi bars have the wireless subwoofers that power the surrounds as well and they are a popular, economical choice that get good reviews on Amazon. If you are on a really strict budget, the Vizio systems still offer 5.1 surround sound and have the sub/satellite connections I mentioned and won't break the bank.
I have two different models of the Vizio soundbar with the wireless rear speakers, both of which I got from CostCo on Black Friday for $150. So I've liked it enough to buy it twice for two TVs.

I run all HDMIs into the TV, and then do optical audio out into the sound bar. It wirelessly transmits the audio to the rear speaker which plug into the sub woofer.
It's perfectly acceptable audio quality for the price point and what it is. Sometimes the rear satellite speakers sound a bit weird if it's non 5.1 content and it is trying to simulate a surround sound feel, but other than that it's fine.
The speakers do this weird thing though with video games where the audio drops out if there is complete silence. Like if I am playing Super Mario Bros on my NES classic, it tends to drop a lot of audio. I don't understand it. It's like it cuts off the signal because it's not receiving something for a split second, then quickly fades it back up. That's my only complaint about these speakers. And both models do it, so it's not just a faulty model thing.
I've certainly heard better sound out of other speakers, but this was the only system I saw with wireless satellite speakers and that is worth it to not have to run a cord across my living room.
