Everyone will and already has told you to do 2.1. But despite that there is a place for a sound bar.

The best bang for the buck I have found is this vizio sound bar. I picked mine up when it wen on sale for $50 on a refurbished one.

It sounds decent enough and is a substantial and noticeable improvement over TV built in speakers. Plus the best part is its so cheap you won't feel bad replacing it if you upgrade later.

Honestly, get a cheap vizio sound bar, I have mine mounted above a 40" Toshiba mounted on a bare wall with no furniture on it. And it has optical input.

I'm looking to upgrade my amp. I use this amp for both watching TV and listening to records.

My current set up:

Orbit plus turn table

ART DJPRE II phono preamp

[JVC TH-D50 amp] (http://support.jvc.com/consumer/product.jsp?modelId=MODL027940&pathId=30&page=3&archive=true) -- I'm only using the Amp and Sub from this set as it was free at the time

[Klipsch Synergy F-20 Floor Speaker] (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882780027) x2

What is your budget? $200-300

What are you looking for? A better looking and better sounding amp. Hopefully black to match all other equipment.

How will you typically be using the gear? Mostly television, however I'll be listening to vinyl records as well.

Are you willing to buy used? I'd like to not buy used.

EDIT: I wouldn't mind upgrading my soundbar and sub as well. Price matters though.

EDIT 2: [is this a deal at all] (http://electronics.woot.com/offers/vizio-40-2-1-home-theater-sound-bar-w-wireless-sub-2?ref=cnt_dly_img)

You may be able to get a bar style speaker that sits underneath you TV (Here is Vizio's version and it's universal so should work for all tvs Speaker Bar). Also a possible route to go is get and adapter and plug some computer speakers into your TV audio out (Adapter). If you had a decent set of computer speakers that would be an option for you.

Since you've gotten a lot of over complicated responses, thought I would throw this out there. I got one of these for my dad on Father's day and I think it sounds okay for what it is. It's about 42" wide and will give you a decent stereo field. Plus with the SRS gimmicky surround sound it actually pulls off the effect nicely.

I got this sound bar refurbished for $60 and it works like it's brand new. It also has a digital optical audio input.

A good receiver will probably run you about $200. Preferably, you'd want a Denon or Onkyo, but those are going to be out of your price range. Avoid Bose, Klipsch, and any of Best Buy's in-store brands. Settle with Yamaha or Sony.

If you eventually want to do 5.1/7.1, something like this or this will do you fine. Ignore extra features like HDMI ports. If you're connecting it to a computer, all you really need is 1 optical port or multi-channel RCA ports. Then, spend the rest on speakers.

Both of the units I posted can output 100w per channel, so some reasonably sized speakers are in order. You want cabinets with speakers devoted to at least high and mid-to-low range -- no dinky "full-range" speakers like Bose uses.

If you're good with power tools, make your own cabinets and save a fortune(1, 2, 3). Otherwise, these, these, or these are good entry-level speakers. DJ speakers/sound cabinets also make good, cheap speakers, but they require a lot more power to drive and usually need to be tuned for home audio. Of course, if you're the set it and forget it type, you can do away with the receiver and speaker placements and just get a sound bar (1, 2).

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions on wiring and what not. Just to note, though, I use lamp cord for most of my setups.
