Unfortunately not really. There was a very strong Eugenics movement at the beginning of the 20th century in the US and Canada as well. Planned Parenthood has it's roots in this as well as the founder though that poverty was inherited.

Forced sterilizations happened in parts of North America up until the 60's and '70s.

War Against the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race is a pretty good primer on the subject.

If you haven't already come across it this book will be interesting for you.

Okay, if you don't mind me using the labels, I'm an antinatalist and very strongly against eugenics. I don't think that totalitarianism or selective persecution of often disenfranchised people (as occurred in the 19th and 20th century history of eugenics in America and Europe; see this book, which I've read, for example) would "limit the damage", I think it would introduce new damages of its own, but that's just my opinion.

And, even if you thought it would create a stronger and healthier human race (which I don't), surely that's a bad thing from an antinatalist perspective, because it shores up the whole detestable system. An unhealthy and ever-growing human race would presumably be more likely to lead to systemic collapse and extinction.

When I was younger I read about the eugenical movement and it's roots called War Against the Weak by Edwin Black. It provided a new context for viewing society and her customs. Very eye opening.

The Reconstructionist, or post-civil war, US had many problems that it tried to remedy through social engineering and socialist policies that were cruelly pragmatic. A lot of the social conventions to which we adhere today are rooted in that dogma.

Just the Reich, eh?

Eugenics is pseudoscience. If you think otherwise, go look at some purebred dogs and marvel at their superior genetics.

If you want a book that you will hate the content of, I suggest War Against the Weak. It's a wonderful explanation and study of the eugenics movement in America and Britain, and how the ideologies moved into Germany pre-WWII.

If you want an in depth book check out War Against the Weak by Edwin Black

Good book on this is 'War Against the Weak': http://www.amazon.com/War-Against-Weak-Eugenics-Americas/dp/0914153293/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372803462&sr=8-1&keywords=war+against+the+weak

Unfortunately, eugenics inverted rapidly into dysgenic policy, which is also destructive.

Umm... No. No it didn't. The eugenics movement gained significant socio-psuedo-scientific traction in the US, but had foundation in the European ideologies of such people as Herbert Spencer, the mid 17th century eugenicist who first coined the phrase "survival of the fittest".

Yes, the US justified all manner of racism, by giving eugenics pseudo-scientific credibility (sterilized a few hundred thousand too, wiping out many of America's oldest communities), but it neither created the idea, nor carried it to it's natural extreme (thanks Nazi's). If you're interested in the subject, i would suggest the works of Edwin Black, specifically War Against the Weak - Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race. Don't be dissuaded by the title. His works are extensive, and well worth your time to read. I would imagine that you would find no shortage of material to use for TIL posts after reading one of his works. There are few things in history more embarrassing than the Eugenics movement, especially in contrast with current-day political efforts (Obama Care, Planned Parenthood, Right to Die, Etc.). It's simply not taught in schools, they would rather blame the entire movement on Hitler (played such a small role in the grand scheme of things).

TL:DR Eugenics was never widely implemented in Europe, but the sentiment was always there. It started there too.

I highly encourage folks to get their hands on a copy of Edwin Black's "War Against the Weak",

For those who think eugenics is a by-gone concept from history past, consider that in the last forty years, one of our Noble Prize recipients (and MIT graduate) was a strong promoter of racism, eugenics, and sterilization. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Shockley#Personal_life. He was parodied in an SNL sketch that had Rodney Dangerfield having to "replenish" the stock at one of his sperm bankshttp://snltranscripts.jt.org/79/79msperm.phtml

If anyone would like to read a pretty good book about Eugenics that centers on the ERO and the movement (especially in the US) in general, this is one:

War Against the Weak: Eugenics and America's Campaign to Create a Master Race

It's funny you mention Tesla being a fan of eugenics. He came up in a time when eugenics was more accepted in the mainstream. Both public and private entities like the Rockefellar Institute, Carnegie Foundation, as well as various public organizations were huge proponents of eugenics and dumped vast amounts of money into research.

This was during the early 20th century and Americans and Germans were collaborating on this research. In fact, you will be shocked to learn that many elite intellectuals and high powered individuals in America had views that were not that far off from what the Nazi's were working on. If you are interested in the history of eugenics, I would recommend War Against the Weak.
