The above makes up the core of my BIFL kitchen stuff. I have other stuff, like cutting boards, sous vide, grater, blow torch, etc. But those things are not necessary and don't last for life.

They're convenient to pull apart during cleaning, cutting action is meh (perhaps I need to sharpen them), but for the most part these shears are going strong after 7 years of tough daily use.
They are for opening bottles and jars. Better sets have metal inserts in them.

That's where I'm leaning so far. Unless my parents have extra knives sitting in the basement that they want to get rid of, I'll probably end up getting this, this, this, this, this, and a couple of these.
or if you are lazy, get a good pair of kitchen shears and cut the bone out. You lose a little more meat than you do w/ a filet knife but I find it quicker and easier. I like these kitchen shears b/c the two blades separate for easy cleaning. They are one of my "go to" kitchen tools.
Toaster oven: I always suggest Cuisinart. They make a good small kitchen appliance. Reliable, and while more expensive than others, it's worth it.
Microwave: You may never have time to cook an actual meal.
Cooking utensils: Calphalon Nylon. Good value.
Crockpot: Showing up on a lot of suggestions. A mini will serve you well unless you're feeding large quantities of people.
Dish rack, a sturdy (large) trash can, laundry bags and smart storage, and kitchen shears.
