That's the stone

I have an old finishing stone but it doesn't say the grit on it

Also I have a very cheep strop that I've been using after each use but I just got a better one in the mail today

The reason everybody is against the advice in the link you posted is because it's wrong. Way too many people waste money on gear that is unusable, and then either give up or delude themselves into thinking that their shaves are supposed to feel that way. Bad advice just perpetuates this problem.

Yes, it is possible to spend little and have a good razor. In fact, I've given you specific instructions on how to do so. But that doesn't mean you can buy any piece of shit and shave with it; most sub-$100 straight razors (example 1, example 2) won't shave, period. You're better off with cartridges or an electric.

The razor the blogger you linked allegedly bought (I say allegedly because it looks a lot like he just photoshopped this picture from another blog) is not a cheap razor - retail price on a Dovo Bismarck is north of $150. Yeah, it's possible to get a good deal on eBay, but I'm as skeptical of the blogger's claim that he bought that razor for 44€ as I am of his claim that he's getting comfortable shaves off a 3500-grit stone.

Speaking of which, whoever told you that 3-4k grit is sufficient for finishing doesn't know what he's talking about. Yes, you can shave with that edge, but it will be damned uncomfortable. Maybe - just maybe - you can even make it usable by stropping on abrasives. But generally speaking even an edge off an 8k stone is pretty rough. 12k, 14k, or 20k are much more common, and for good reason.

I'm far from an expert on this subject. Matter of fact, I'm just learning to do more honing than simple touch-ups. But I'm getting my information from people who know what they're doing - guys who have honed thousands of razors - rather than from some dude with a blog who has no experience and no clue what he's talking about.
