I have a confession to make: I love bloody marys. Sunday morning on my front porch? Give me a pitcher. Out to brunch with friends? Sure, I'll have three (four?). I have spent YEARS ordering bloody marys, making notes on what bars and restaurants did, experimenting at home, using V8 or Tomato Juice, combining citrus and soy, worsteshire sauce and celery salt, A1, Effin Cucumber Vodka, Absolute Peppar Vodka, siracha, franks, garlic salt, pepper, salt, LOTS or horseradish, wasabi instead? why not. Making jugs of recipes days before so it could all sit together and mesh and mellow and blend, only to be mixed with vodka on a perfect sunday morning. Topped with old bay. A hollowed out all beef smokey as a straw and garnished with blue cheese or jalepeno olives.
Then, my friends, then one day I went to a new bar near my house. I ordered a bloody mary. Mere moments later she arrived. Deep red, flecks of spices and additions floating in her fragrant liquids. I took a sip. Perfection. Citrus notes mixed with a faint hit of celery salt, an earthy bittersweet note of steak sauce, a mouth coating rush of fresh tomato, a salty-hot finish and the slow burn of vodka. I ordered another. And another. Each time the arrived so quickly that I knew this magical elixir must be have been crafted by an expert's hand days prior, left to mature like a fine wine. I dared, barely audibly, to ask for the secret. The recipe. The answer to my quest. The bartender, coyly, leaned in and whispered..... "zing zang."
