Sardine lover here. They're sustainable, delicious, and really healthful! When you feel like giving them another try, be sure to get high-quality sardines - bad ones are very bad. My favorite brand is Bela, but they're pricey, usually between $3 and $4 per can. Another good brand that's a little more widely available is King Oscar. They come in lots of different flavors; my favorite is Mediterranean.

Neither one of these brands includes the head, though Bela sardines are a little bit bigger so the bones are a BIT more prominent - but as /u/parallelrule said, they are barely discernible. If that still grosses you out, go with King Oscar.

Add a few drops of hot sauce to the sardines and eat them on saltines. One of the best convenient lunches out there.

Amazon is cheaper than that. $2.53 a can when bought in packs of 6 (here). And, if you have Prime, the shipping is free (or, at least already paid for).

If you can stomach them, I'm absolutely nuts about Brisling sardines. "Sardine" is a catch-all that includes some pretty big fish. Brisling sardines are small, to the point where you can eat the bones. My favorite lunch ever is a tin of Brisling sardines and a little goat cheese and sometimes a little hot sauce.

This is the kind I get, though, there are cheaper brands, and you can also get them in water instead of olive oil, if you're worried about the extra calories. I like the flavor, though, and it fits my macros.

In fact, my typical day of meals is exactly like yours, but with your lunch shifted to breakfast and sardines +goat cheese for lunch instead.

I wouldn't bother too much with it. It really depends if they actually want Russian food.

I'd go with something simple and not offensive. Couple of salads like this.

Buy some Sprats: https://www.amazon.com/Latvian-Smoked-Riga-Sprats-Pack/dp/B00DJGEDLY

Some Caviar appetizers.

Spanish rice (which is actually Mexican but easy to do) and can pass off as Plov.

Bottle of Vodka.

That should be enough to satisfy some nostalgia. I wouldn't bother with more complex dishes.

I really like sardines as an easy superfood. link

I used to take fish oil, but I just eat these a few days a week now. Super convenient, tastes good, and the olive oil is good calories.

There are! Wild Planet has bpa-free sardines. These are what I've been buying lately.

It's a significant discount over Whole Foods.

I've looked around and nobody can beat the price on King Oscar at Walmart. These are a really good deal if you sign up for the subscription. Note that the subscription can be cancelled at any time, effectively making it a one time 15% off coupon if you like.

First of all, thanks for putting this together, I think it's very useful and enlightening.

Sardines: There seems to be something odd about US prices vs. Brit prices here. The ones I buy from Amazon are here:

http://www.amazon.com/Crown-Prince-Sardines-Water-4-25-Ounce/dp/B005M1EKHQ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8

I think this is the same item on Amazon UK, but it isn't clearly labeled as a 12 pack:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crown-Prince-Natural-Skinless-Boneless/dp/B003SO4LP0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8

Even if it is a 12 pack it's hugely more expensive at 44 GBP vs. about 11 GBP for the first one. I'm at a loss as to why it's so different, but if this pricing holds true to your source it would explain why that dot is so low on the chart. Using the US version it's 18g x 12 containers / 11 GBP = 19.6, so right next to salmon.

Just a helpful tip, try adding some fish to your diet.

You can get low sodium varieties of sardines for really cheap, and they're safe to eat daily because of the really low levels of mercury.

They're loaded with helpful stuff both for general health and weight loss. Also, I think they're delicious but I guess I'm not everyone heh. Good luck!

Here's a link to a big pack of sardines for decently cheap

Here's one showing how low in mercury they are

Here's a nutritional profile on a regular sodium variety, notice how high they are in protein, omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin b12, they're a decent source of vitamin d, and other goodies like choline too

Here's a study showing fish is good for you

Season sardines are what I started on. If you want to take a step up in consistency/quality, try Matiz Gallego:

For decades, I enjoyed the cheap-ass Commander sardines … even the bones were considered little treasures.

Then, prepping for this exact recipe, I discovered these amazing things.

u/stefanielaine · 2 pointsr/keto

Oh man, what a challenge! I'd add almonds and beef jerky to your list - 30 or so almonds will keep me full for a few hours. And I agree that I definitely wouldn't want to risk leaving eggs or meat out for that long. Almond buns or flax buns will keep at room temperature for that amount of time. Do you think you could find some shelf-stable cream cheese packets or butter packets like you get in restaurants? If so, buns with cream cheese/butter are a great, filling meal.

Also, it depends on how comfortable you are eating smelly-ish food on a train, but sardines are shelf-stable too. I get these from amazon because I'm not metal enough to eat bones and they're AMAZING.

u/CommandrGylbertAdama · 1 pointr/keto

I'm personally a fan of these

u/flaminglasrswrd · 1 pointr/Supplements

Edit - ignore all of this (bad math)
Canned sardines ftw. Even the more expensive Wild Planet sardines are competitive as fish oil sources. 1800mg EPA+DHA per can at $2.32 per can equates to $0.013 per 100mg. Kirkland signature is $0.011 per 100mg. Plus with sardines you get protein, iron, calcium, zinc, and more. You can by cheaper sardines for a little less than half that, but the quality isn't as good IMO. Of course, you have to like eating sardines...

u/Diablo-D3 · 1 pointr/Paleo

Just eat them straight.

Also, as an overlap of /r/Frugal, Walmart and Amazon both sell them in 12 can packs for $1.50-$2.00 a can, a lot better than the normally $2.50-$3.00 a can.

Sardines in oil if you can find them. . Fry them up in a bunch of coconut butter and thai curry sauce -- add a shit-ton of greens and a couple of eggs and it's a party. You're also eating the super food's super food with your ass literally blowing up with Omega 3s, Turmeric and whatever the fuck is in coconut butter that is so good for you.
