Hello, assuming your husband is counting saccharomyces and not brettanomyces cultures. I would recommend this:

I use this at my brewery for yeast counting. It's affordable and allows you to store images on a SD card. Also it has a digital zoom option that bypasses the need for anything higher than 100x.

I would also recommend getting him a hemocytometer which allows him to accurately count a sample at .100mm so he can to the math.
