Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Lead Belly, etc.

You can also look into some of the recordings that John Lomax and his son Alan made of American Folk Music (other people made recordings as well). I had better luck looking for music from Alan Lomax rather than John.
