Best counseling education books according to redditors

Here’s a couple of books that will give you strategies to be a more effective educator, especially with low-income students. Realistically the strategies are great for any kid, as all kids can use some support and empathy from the adults in the lives.

“Reading and Reaching Children Who Hurt” by Susan E. Craig - How to more effectively teach children who have experienced trauma (Adverse Childhood Experiences). His experience is the goal of the strategies given in the book. (Amazon) I haven’t read it, but she also has two more recent books, “Trauma Sensitive Schools” K-5 and 6-12

Trauma Sensitive Schools: Approaches that Work - A project by the Massachusetts Advocates for Children and Harvard Law School has free books (downloadable pdf). One focused on the background and the second is about implementing a school-wide approach.

“Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria” by Dr. Beverly Tatum - Covers the theory of racial identity development and how to support positive racial identity in an educational setting. (Amazon)

I would first start by browsing the website of the college that you want to attend. The website will list the programs offered, admissions policies, tuition information, etc. Almost everything you need to know.

I would also check out some books from the library (free!) about what you need to know about college to succeed. Just by searching Amazon, I found Communityh College Success

There are many, many books about how to what college entails and how to succeed. Amazon says there are over 3000 books in their "college guides" section.

It is very difficult to understand the college process when you don't have any role models for how to apply, what programs to take, and what you need to do outside of the classroom to succeed. So I think that reviewing the website in great detail, reading books, and making an appointment with an academic advisor.

L'enseignement et l'apprentissage, c'est beaucoup de temps, beaucoup d'attention, beaucoup d'efforts. Ces fausses innovations peuvent amener bien des réformes mais bien moins de résultats.

I took lessons at The Voice Lab and would recommend them. My training was for MtF voice, but they also do FtM voice lessons. They're located on the north side of Chicago, but offer lessons by Skype for those who aren't local.

I used to run 3 hour groups in a mandated substance abuse program with low SES clients (most lived in shelters). Games. It seems childish, but I can turn just about any game into therapy. Look into the book therapy games it is geared toward teens, but some simple adjustments turn the activities into legit therapy for adults. My clients loved the games for the visual kind of lessons.
