actually modern version of this are better. They have a hopper so they go much faster, and are designed push cherries out int a bowl with each plunge. like this

I love Alton Brown but I hate that mentality. It's way too simplistic and doesn't take into account any rational thought at all.

It all depends on how much time and labor they save you vs how much space they take up. Something like this for example would be a pretty bad one. It would take as long or longer to actually clean for safe operation than it would be to just use a knife. It's rather expensive. It would take up a massive amount of cabinet space.

This takes up almost no space when laying down in a drawer, is much faster than using a straw or a chop stick or a disgusting broken pen that just creates excessive waste or food safety issues, and is dirt cheap to obtain.

I wouldn't keep that huge device in OP's picture around taking up space because I don't do enough cherry pitting, but I know people who do. But I do just enough to keep around a $13 device that I don't even notice is taking up space when I'm not looking for it.

They should change the headline to "Heritage Foundation lobbyists pen op-ed and Trump agrees to let them put his name on it". I guarantee! you Trump didn't write a word of that editorial, and it came straight from the desk of some conservative think tank.

This style (I haven't tried that exact one) works pretty well, but it's hard to find a good quality one where the spiky bit runs straight without wobbling side to side.

This one is supposedly the top of the line but I've never used one.

If you're going to do any quantity of cherries, get this one instead. You can go really fast, which helps if you're doing enough to make a pie etc.

How far does it open? It looks similar to this olive and cherry pitter

Got one of these:

I cut the avocado in 2, remove the pit and use the "tool".

I end up with almost perfect slices.

Agree with Haynes.

True. I bought this plastic one for pitting cherries. But it's nice because it has a hopper and pits cherries pretty damn fast.

The advantage to this thing is you can get a fast rhythm going. If you have ever made jam, you have to process a large amount of fruit. They now make one that [looks like pliers.] (https://www.amazon.com/Cherry-Pitter-Heavy-Stoner-Ion-1B/dp/B00VCA77OO/ref=sr_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1501763579&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=cherry+pitter&psc=1)

This thing works wonders! We eat a lot of cherries. https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Grips-Olive-Cherry-Pitter/dp/B000NQ925K

I have an older variation of this it works great, and does a fast job on the cherries.

u/ems88 · 2 pointsr/Canning

I've been using this cherry pitter by Progressive. I haven't tried one of the ones with a hopper, but this has sure beat the hell out of the ones that look like a hand-held hole punch. You can pit four at a time with minimal effort. It has a tray that holds the cherries and it's action is much more similar to a three hole punch. There's also a container to catch the pits.

Nothing fancy, but it worked fine for ~30 lbs of cherries a couple of years ago.

Spoon or a butter/cutlery knife.

or

Slice the half w/ pit in half (i.e. quarter it), pull it out.

Sticking a sharp, pointy knife in a fruit which you hold in your hand sound like a bad idea even thinking about it. That alone should be enough to find a better way.

I have a new fangled version of this. Looks like this:

These are pretty good for sour cherries, I have a new one, its almost identical to the 25 year old one my neighbor has: https://www.amazon.com/Westmark-40002260-Cherry-Stoner-Kernex/dp/B000FDSM0W/
