Yep! That is a free motion quilting ruler. That looks like a very specialized one, so depending on your quilting style it may be perfect or something you use once a year.

If you want something at a lower price point, the HandiQuilter Versa Tool has a straight edge, two curves, and a corner. (HandiQuilter designed the original one with that shape, but cheaper knock-offs pop up every once in a while.)

Before using a ruler with FMQ, you should get a ruler foot. (Apologies if this is obvious or you already know this.) Ruler feet are a lot like normal darning or free motion quilting feet, they just have taller rims/edges so that the ruler won't slide on top of the foot and under your needle. The ruler you linked specifies high-shank, but you'll be able to use it with high or low shank machines. If your machine is high shank, it's a bit more expensive to find a ruler foot, but they're there.

With ruler thickness, they're almost always 1/4" thick (like the one you linked). Some rulers also come 3mm thick for low shank machines. I've never used one of those, but it seems incredibly thin--thinner than cutting rulers.

Good luck!

I don’t have a cutting machine. About every 2 years I think about it, then decide I don’t like the waste or ongoing expenses.

That being said, the thing that made me hate cutting much less was to pick up a slotted ruler. I have both a creative grids and a June tailor, and I by far prefer the creative grids. Less slipping and 20” worth of slots.

Here it is. I'll talk you through making it if you're interested. You'll need a 9 degree ruler like this.

The most standard ruler to start with is a 6"x24".

It will do almost all your cutting, and will adapt to a surprising amount of work.

This will be my next one (cause it is just that cool). But honestly, you have to be able to read measurements off of this. Omnigrid makes the easiest to read, but take a look at different ones and see what is good for YOU!

No matter what ruler you get, you can always make them grippier! Try something like these:

This is my favorite mat. It has lasted over 20 years. It is thicker than other brands. (and cheaper!)
