I've got a great solution for you. Go to a fabric store and ask for Cotton Duck

It's essentially low to mid grade raw canvas, but way cheaper than at an art store.

If you're doing acrylic then really any surface will do. I started working on wood with acrylics because it was cheaper and more durable than canvas.

Shit you can gesso a nice piece of cardboad and come away with good results.

You could also get canvas paper, which is a lot cheaper than stretched canvases but is the same material so you can keep it forever.
