First of all I think that if you want to get the full Pratchett experience you should start reading Guards! Guards! or Mort or Reaper Man, or maybe even the first book in the witches series. You can find a Discworld reading guide just by googling.

I agree that Pterry covers tend to look ridiculous so I'd invest in either the black editions or the new Gollancz hardbacks. They're affordable and much classier. Do you like these versions better?
