I can't speak to the quality of the knives but these are the same ones on amazon with a ton of reviews that generally look positive

I have a couple by Henckels and a set by Wolfgang Puck... but I think the key is just honing them regularly

I don't know a ton about knives but we have these Wusthof knives and they're pretty nice.

You don't have to spend much to get a decent knife set.

I did a lot of research , and even though the much touted knife by victorinox is a really good knife, it is a bit pricey for my taste. Mind you, kitchen minimalists usually say that all you need is a chef's knife, a paring knife, and a good bread knife.

I purchased this set of chicago cutlery for $15 and some change. (edit) Amazon is now running a 4-for-3 promotion, so this means you buy four items that qualify for this promotion, and you get the lowest priced one free. Not a bad deal at all.

I then purchased this chicago cutlery bread knife for another $15

lastly i purchased a chicago cutlery steel to keep all the knives honed.

So, altogether it tallies up to about $42 (free shipping since it is more than $25). Keep in mind that these items all qualify for the 4-for3 promotion, so you could pick these up, and maybe buy some kitchen shears, and get them free or what not.

So far i am more than happy with my purchase. Could the Victorinox have been a better chef's knife than that Chicago Cultery? probably so. Is it that much better that i need to pay for 1 knife what i paid for almost the whole set? NO.

Just make sure you use some mineral oil on the wood handles. These knives are extremely well built, and have a good heft to them. I sharpened them with the steel, and they cut like a razor.

If you are really set on using all wood knives, then get the chicago cultery steak knife set as well. NOTE: these do not qualify for the 4-for3 promotion.

I purchased the Miu steak knives instead, note that they qualify for the 4-for3 promotion as well.

Hope this helps.

If she's spent decades cutting everything with serrated knives, I would definitely include (I agree, skip the sets) some very nice serrated knives -- doesn't matter if what she's cutting would be better cut with something else; anyone who's been around long enough to be a Nana can be safely assumed to have most preferences pretty set in stone.

Amazon.ca is crazy-overpriced for most things, so definitely comparison shop, too.

You should also assume that her old knives are not going to hit the trash the day she gets the gift, so anything that comes in a block with only enough space for the ones in the set leaves her with having to have two knife storage spots. You might throw in a 'universal' knife block she can put her old ones and the new ones in together.

Try and think about what she will actually use, and what she will actually enjoy, rather than what will seem fancy. If you suspect she will keep using steak knives for a lot of things, a funky coloured set of Laguiole ones with the little bees (shouldn't be too hard to find a Canadian supplier; they're pretty common in kitchen shops here in Ottawa) might amuse her...

Got these recently and we love them. The are holding up great and are the same knives most steak places use in Argentina/Paraguay.

Opinel make some with olive wood handles that sharpen up easily. I love the Opinel convex grind, and 12C27 is better steel than most steak knives get.

Maybe Arcos? I like their meat-cutting knives.

I've heard really good feedback about the Laguiole en Aubrac knives, but they are obviously high end and expensive.

I personally use a set of 4 inexpensive serrated Laguioles (not even sure they are made in France), and they surprisingly hold really well and work great for cutting on a ceramic plate.

u/catlovinglesbian · 2 pointsr/steak

i bought these knives and have been extremely happy with them. they cut through steak like lasers.

u/echo_61 · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

All I found were these: https://www.amazon.com/Melange-8-Piece-Ceramic-Handle-Knives/dp/B00RVZ07XW

Kyocera doesn't make any. You could get some 5" Kyocera tomato knifes and fake it though.

I am not a knife set person. I like a really good chef knife, a set fo steak knives, and a paring knife. I use the chef knife for almost everything.

I have a 8" Shun (ken onion) chef knife

I also have a Wusthof 8" Classic Ikon chef knife

I have a cheapie brand paring knife (I think I paid 30 dollars for it and it came with a blade guard for traveling or storing)

my steak knives are old stainless steel farberware knifes. Love those old buggers. they are kind of like these. I have had these for about 15 years so the don't sell anything like them anymore but these are the closest I could find.

I would use a cast iron pan, with a weight on top. My cast iron came with something like this I use for this purpose.

No idea what kind of knifes you need. I like this set. I avoid serrated knives as they tear the meat.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00008GKDJ/ $15
Lodge is pretty much the go to cast iron pan. It's relatively cheap, but it is a pretty simple design after all.

You have 75 bucks left in your budget, I would get this:

https://www.amazon.com/Lavatools-Javelin-Limited-Ambidextrous-Thermometer/dp/B01F59K0KA/

Resist the urge to go cheap on instant read thermometer, it was the single best thing I purchased that drastically improved nearly all the food I cooked - especially steaks.

u/cerdmier · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I have these and see no reason why they won't hold up. They are great!

u/hailtheface · 2 pointsr/Cooking

I'd personally go with non-serrated knives. I like food to be sliced like a razor, not rough sawed. Some people don't mind this nuance, or care to do the upkeep necessary to have straight bladed steak knives that work properly. These knives are supposed to be very good, and are just around your price range. These are a bit cheaper and should be just fine for your purposes, however the handle is reported to be a little rough. Both sets can be sharpened easily as well.

*edit: Forgot to put in second link.

u/OliverBabish · 2 pointsr/food

These are just barely serrated, but I totally agree with you - they're the Wusthof 8-piece set

u/PinkiePromise · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I have several kitchen items on my list <3 thanks so much for doing this!

This cutting board comes to mind! Has lots of nifty compartments and is generally well made! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K5343TM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_k3LyCbXA09G9Q

Also! This is a little bit more than $20 but I wanted to show you for the inspiration- Gorgeous flatware! And matching steak knives if you want to complete the look!

u/joek440 · 1 pointr/Browns

Lots of joke answers but the most interesting Browns product I saw this season were these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HRVTYSS/ref=twister_dp_update?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Pretty fun tailgate item

I was looking for steak knives last year and wanted something super sharp and a fine edge, not serrated. I wanted something to cleanly cut through the meat, not tear it, which is what serrated does.

I ordered these and I've been very happy. They're super sharp. I did resharpen them last month with a simple knife sharpener than you pull the knife through and they were just as sharp after that as the day I bought them. I wouldn't hesitate to order another set.

You have a few options:

Two skillets on top of each other like this. Make sure to pre-heat both skillets and make sure to not touch the hot skillet with your bare hands.

Get a bacon press like this.

Wrap a brick in foil and use it like a bacon press.

Buy a George Foreman grill/similar product.

I'd say steak knives. Right now we are cutting steaks with a paring knife and chef knife.

u/Pseud0pod · 1 pointr/Cooking

I had to buy knives when my roommate moved out a while ago, and was very happy with these choices:

Kyocera Ceramic Paring Knife

Victorinox 10" Chef's Knife

Henckels Steak Knifes

The chef and paring knife are all you really need for food preperation, and the serrated knifes are good for when you serve meat that needs to be cut, like steak.

u/iheartschadenfreude · 1 pointr/Cooking

I really don't like how they cut steak - a good non-serrated blade is much more to my preference (of course, this is purely subjective, to each their own).

I'm about to pull the trigger on this Messermeister set to replace this serrated set, I'm just looking for a set of knife guards for the Messermeister's...

u/FalseHope4All · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Congrats! I like my prime rib medium rare. My favorite is when its cooked over hickory. Can't have steak without steak knives.

/u/bubblybreath would you like to join me for dinner?

No soup for you!

u/BeautifulDuwang · 1 pointr/nfl

No problem! Happy to help with any knife/kitchen stuff.

>then I'll just buy a separate steak knife set

Going to just throw this out here.
