No, that's not my message. You're making me into a straw man. What I am saying is that nonviolent protest, in its Gandhian, MLK incarnation, means that you, as protestor, must accept a beating or even death ... because that is what brings people to your side. That's what moves people who are otherwise neutral.

I am not saying Antifa "should have let the Klan murder [West, et al.] because of MLK's message." I'm simply saying that nonviolent protest relies on NOT resisting. That's how it works. That's what gains sympathy.

Is it fine and even commendable for Antifa to have come to the rescue? Yes! It is. But it's not as effective as non-violence, which means you say to your oppressor, "I'm willing to die without resisting." As I said, I'm not that brave, and few people are, and I'm not expecting Cornell West or others to meet that high expectation. But it is the true core of the non-violence strategy pursued by Gandhi and King, who put it forward not because they wanted martyrdom, but because they knew what would work and what wouldn't work to advance their cause.

Here's a fine book written by a colleague of mine that goes into detail about how to use nonviolence to defeat fascism and racism: https://www.amazon.com/Peace-Lessons-Timothy-Braatz/dp/0692303758.

As far as building a larger movement and building alliances with the black community: you might be right. Maybe engaging Nazis with violent resistance, or the threat of it, will work to build our movement. But, on the other hand, if things get out of hand--if there is rioting, esp. rioting that leads to killings--the right will readily condemn the Nazis and racial bigots (as much of the right has already done). So will the Democratic centrists, just as they have already done. And they will then call for the restoration of law and order through greater police powers, surveillance, CoIntelPro type programs, as well as agent provocateurs.

Centrists will then use race as a wedge issue, which is what they did in 2016, telling the black community that they're going to ramp up police power to protect them.

Sanders's own self-declared dedication to non-violence will be used against him ... he'll be called a hypocrite of he defends bottle and rock throwers in Ninja clothing. If he has to defend that stuff time and again ... if, that is, it comes with more violence ... he'll pay a political price.

Now, yes, if the Nazis keep simply running over non-violent protesters, and Sanders can say correctly "our side aren't the violent ones, the other side is," then he will reap political dividends.

But who knows how things will really shake out? Will there be mayhem at one of the upcoming rallies? Will the police jump in faster to make sure that doesn't happen?

Anyway, you make some good points, and I'm not saying that "yeah, let's all go be martyrs." But am saying that yes indeed, nonviolent protest really does mean nonviolence.

Part of me does admire Antifa, but a bigger part of me says "this is dangerous stuff."
