Oh ok, I thought you were looking to move IR to the ESP. Are you using the IRremote library that comes with Teensyduino on the 4.0? Did you update all the libs when you reinstalled Teensyduino for the 4.0?

There's a boarddefs.h file in the IRremote library that has a bunch of teensy 4 specific code in it, so I would assume Paul Stoffregen made sure it was compatible before releasing the updated Teensyduino. You should be able to check the line number given in the error message to see which line of code isn't compiling on the 4.0.

You can find boarddefs.h in c:\program files(x86)\Arduino\hardware\teensy\avr\libraries\IRremote\boarddefs.h.

I have a Wemos Lolin32 and a TTGO T-Camera+ board currently, which are both pretty good. They both have displays on them, so they might not be the best choice for your project, especially the T-Camera board, which doesn't have any pins other than a 5 pin connector for i2c. This would be a good starter board for your project.

Personally, I've been eyeballing Espressif's new LyraT boards that are made for audio to use in a smart speaker project I'm working on for my uncle. It's only $20, has a DAC chip on board (ES8388) and even a 3W stereo amplifier. Espressif even has a new ESP-ADF framework for audio processing using this board.

I ordered a Project box (ABS box) I don't have it all put together yet. I'm waiting on a few more switches to arrive. The box i ordered isn't exactly want i wanted but it was as close as i could get. If you have any ideas for enclosures let me know. Walmart carries a metal clipboard that is like a box also that i think would work good but idk.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear in my previous qustion. I want to be able to connect the teensy to another device that has a UART debug header (router, smart tv, embedded linux system, etc.) and use the Teensy as a serial interface with my computer. Like this adapter. Will I need a RS232 chip in order to interface with a UART debug header? Or can I use the UARTs on the Teensy itself without additional hardware?

I solder pins on my Teensy 3.6 and then plug in one of these cables (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y5M6JTV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) from amazon. If I need more USB ports, I add a small hub...
