I got a copy from the library and am making a manatee from the book. The patterns are easy to understand and make. Hopefully you can find it at the library for free!

For starters, knitters use two needles; crocheters use one hook. Know which one she needs or the gift will be useless!

If you're looking for crochet hooks, the Clover sets are amazing and will literally change the way she crochets. I swear they're imbued with magic or something. Some people prefer the Amour, some swear by the Soft Touch, both are awesome. There's also a bamboo set for people who prefer working with bamboo, though I've never used them myself. You can buy individual hooks, but any of the sets I've linked to will include the majority of sizes she'd need for everyday projects.

If you prefer to buy in person, you can get the Amour at AC Moore or the Soft Touch at Michaels; JoAnn carries both lines.

These are my favorite set of hooks. They are sold out on amazon but you can find them elsewhere. They run about $20-30 depending on the seller but I have had them for 4 years and still going.
