20. Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set
Sentiment score: 1
Number of reviews: 1
For 4-6 PlayersEverything you need to start playing the world's greatest roleplaying gamePresents the newest edition of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game in a way that’s easy to learn and fun to play.
Running the Game by Matt Colville is a great place to start. He explains generally what the game is, how to run it, builds an adventure for you, and then spends the next 80 or so videos going on beautifully long tangents about things mildly related to D&D. But the first few episodes are a goldmine for a beginner, if you ever feel compelled to take the spotlight and be a DM. Which if you ever want to start playing with friends, you likely will have to do.
Another option if you don’t want anything to do with that DM business for now is head to your local tabletop gaming shop. Not Target (although they actually do sell some relevant stuff I’ll mention later), I mean a shop specifically built to sell games like Magic the Gathering and D&D. They probably sponsor games you can join and get a taste of how the game works.
Or yet another option, buy the Starter Set which has everything you need to get started. I haven’t played the Essentials Kit but it also seems useful.
However you go about it, I highly recommend starting!
I’m pregnant and have both of these saved and will be ordering ABC’s as soon as it’s available again. My husband is excited haha we also have a player’s handbook and monster manual that were specifically written for kids... let me find a link real quick because they’re super cool and have Pokémon style size references with descriptions like “about the size of a beachball” or other random relatable objects.
Edit: Monsters and Creatures
Warriors and Weapons
There are apparently more of them? The author was at GenCon and these are the two we got
Welcome to the wonderful world of Chuck Tingle, two-time Hugo award nominee, and known for his short works erotic fiction known as “tinglers”. Here is just a small sample of his book titles:
And of course, his most recent work: Pounded In The Butt By Area 51 While Attempting To Storm It.
And yes, they are all available on Amazon.
D&D Beyond is very expensive $300-500, but well worth it, especially if the whole campaign goes in on it.
For OP, you can start with just the Player's Handbook or the standard bundle of the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual bundle [link] (https://www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Rulebooks-Slipcase-Handbook/dp/0786966629/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?keywords=dungeons+and+dragons+5th+edition&qid=1564184932&s=gateway&sprefix=Dungeons+and+dragons+&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExUkVIV1lNUzZGM0JBJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTIwODk3UjZHQzFLWDlGT1NCJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAyMjg3MDQxMks0VTJWTjc4V0ozJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfcGhvbmVfc2VhcmNoX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=)
Just the PHB will get you started if you find a group to play with. The entire bundle will give you everything you need to start a group yourself.

LGS charge full price so that they can offer sales, the median price on Amazon is $30: 5e PHB camelcamelcamel
It's acutally part of a book series. This is the specific book Short version the first series is about a sentient teddy bear golem. His adventures with his little girl and his eventual quest to save her from an evil king. It's part of a genre called LitRPG. It's a book version of a game with actual stats and the like.
There are some crazy class combos, zany powers and enemies. The second series where this book title comes from is in teh same world and tangentially connected. The MC is tapped by a diety to be a medium who can see fate with her tarot deck.
There are shenanigans afoot in the area and she has to stop a prison break at the secret nearby prison full of semi immortal entities with massive power.
The series can get a bit dark but is a lot of fun especially the audiobook versions the VA is masterful.

"No, t'is a horrendous creature of inconceivable proportions, his scaly back hunched over as if unable to bear the weight of its own madness, leathery wings creaking and folding inward, a mass of tentacles squirming from its octopod head upon a humanoid body!"
"You mean like this?"
"Go fuck yourself."
