The talk about using these services for trolling/catfishing reminded me of this vicious yet funny story from another favorite podcast of mine:

Online dating is extremely interesting. I am monogamous and happily married, so I don't have any experience with it, but I do have several friends who have met significant others through various dating services.

An interesting book on the topic of modern dating is the book Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari (yes, the comedian from Parks and Recs).

We won't end up getting into raising children in part 2, although it's something I think about often. The good news is that, given current studies, children raised in poly families seem to be about as happy and well-adjusted as children in monogamous families. I want to say something about this briefly on the podcast, but in the meantime here are some resources:

More Than Two

Also, Elisabeth Sheff has a couple books on polyamorous families. The Polyamorists Next Door: Inside Multiple-Partner Relationships and Families is a bit more academic, and Stories from the Polycule: Real Life in Polyamorous Families is an anthology of personal stories.

I listened to the latest episode of the Bayesian Conspiracy and I was wondering if you were aware of the Pro-Truth Pledge? I've told you about it previously and I don't think I ever received a response back. This is basically exactly the sort of thing that you were talking about in your latest episode. It's a mechanism for spreading rationality to the general public. During the episode you talked as if this work is hypothetical and hasn't been started yet.

However, the work of spreading rationality to the general public has in fact already been started and is ongoing. The only reason you don't know about it is because most rationalists are averse to spreading rationality to the general public and because of a smear campaign run against the Pro-Truth Movement's founder Gleb Tsipursky (who is a rationalist) by someone in the Effective Altruism movement. You can learn more about the The Pro Truth Pledge here: protruthpledge.org

"The Truth Seeker's Handbook: A Science-Based Guide" by Gleb Tsipursky is basically a version of the Sequences except for a less technically inclined general audience, and you can buy it on amazon (and also preview part of it before you buy it) https://www.amazon.com/Truth-Seekers-Handbook-Science-Based-Guide-ebook/dp/B078429WCF

Also regarding the smear campaign against Gleb Tsipursky and his nonprofit organization Intentional Insights which started the Pro-Truth Movement. http://effective-altruism.com/ea/12z/concerns_with_intentional_insights/ (if you read this make sure to read Gleb Tspursky's comments on it as well) http://www.patheos.com/blogs/intentionalinsights/2017/08/261/

Note: for transparency, I have been working as a volunteer member of Intentional Insights since 2017, and I have been a rationalist since I read HPMOR in 2015.
