> What is the Crucible really?

A MacGuffin.

> what the Crucible actually does?

Saves the Alliance's sorry ass from their own ineptitude. Otherwise people would have had to choose between hope & faith in the council or the risky pragmatism of Cerberus. Which would be fine except that they used up all four cans of red and blue paint in the morality systems of ME1 and ME2 and didn't have enough left for ME3.

> is it explained anywhere how it works?

Nope, the writers drank the entire shelf of Hard SF while they were typing the codex entries for ME1. Except for one of the bottles which hid behind an endpiece and was rediscovered years later. That's how the "Sir Isaac Newton" speech happened.

> Even the basic idea behind it?

No. The Hard SF is gone.

> Like we know that FTL,shields, and space guns work by lowering or raising mass/gravitational effects in a specific area.

You know that part in Pirates of the Caribbean where Captain Jack Sparrow wonders why the rum is gone? This is like that, where you and I and countless other fans of the series are Captain Jack Sparrow, staggering around, confused and horrified, wondering why the Hard SF is gone. Give it a night's rest. Or maybe a few nights. It'll all become clear when the spell wears off.

> Modern Engineers built it so they must have had an even basic understanding of what it does.

Go here for a detailed technical explanation of how the Modern Engineers built it.
