From what I've heard E3D has stated that they don't want to be in the 3D printer business. They are in the hot end business. And what a better marketing and sales tool than to make an open-source printer that takes 4 hot ends.
I think their choice of 200x200x300mm is based on print-bed component availability. 300x200mm heated beds are easy to come by as well as borosilicate glass and build plates. For instance...
