I live in the desert now too, I’m not the springiest of chickens and I’ve stopped coloring my hair. I too can’t style my hair and allowed humidity to do the work for me most of my life. For my current desert, single digit humidity issues I learned that lots of layers are my friend to help keep the weight of my hair pulling out the curls (prior to desert living I was 3b-3c). When I found the CG method I started experimenting and learned I can only co-wash once then I have to do a re-set wash. I get much better curls if I sleep with my plop but I find that uncomfortable. So I started looking for other strategies and I found this take on old fashion foam rollers. Holy cow, the difference in my hair is night and day. I still plop for a lot longer than most, 1-2 hours depending on how much time I have, then I use the rollers (I’m using basic CG method products and procedures, nothing special) for a couple of hours till dry. This is time intensive but I will do this on weekends and wear the rollers while I do around the house/yard stuff. The resulting curls are fantastic and survive my nightly pineapple great. If there are a few curls that pull straight I just loosely roll them again while I get ready for work, no additional products, and they curl right back up. The curls last for days! I’m still battling frizz but I’m so happy with these rollers. I don’t care if people consider this cheating or whatever, it works for my situation. I do get very tight curls when I first remove them, but they fall out into my former natural curls pretty quickly.

If you wanted to do curls OR beach waves sometimes without heat styling, I've had fantastic success with rag rollers (I got these). Just make sure to only wrap when your hair is DAMP, not soaking wet - then sleep in them overnight (I slept in a satin bonnet but YMMV). More rollers = tighter curls (gently finger comb them out in the morning - they'll look like Shirley Temple style when you first unleash them). Fewer rollers = loose waves.
