I've skated off and on my whole life. Turned 30 this year and have started to make a conscious effort to progress at skateboarding. I had the same problem as you and the thing that has helped me the most is filming myself and watching the the footage back to see what I'm actually doing wrong, and what I'm doing right.
Seriously, as far as progressing in skateboarding is concerned, this has been the best $50 I've ever spent.
Ive seen some knock off chinese go pros on amazon for under fifty bucks. Reviews looked pretty good considering thats a fraction of the price of a go pro. Ive been considering one myself, but really do love my go pro because it connects to my phone. I dont know if the fake ones have that feature.

I personally have a Hero3 I won five years ago in a video contest, Crosstour Action Camera I use for my rear on my commuter (when I remember to charge it). And for my race bike I have my Fly6(ce), but I will use it on my commuter if I forget to charge my other rear camera.
