If you're looking for a desktop monitor this may not be it.. But I got a AOC I1601FWUX usb-c powered portable monitor (Amazon Prime Day sale this summer for $125). Note that the negative reviews are almost exclusively people who didn't realize that their laptop needed to have USB-C with displayport, hence they were unable to make it work - not really the monitor's fault! The monitor seems well made and comes with a cover that also works as a stand. Some reviews said the stand was not stable, but I haven't had any problems with it.

I don't have room to have a permanent desk setup at home, so this monitor is perfect for me. I try to avoid working from home, but when I really have to it's so nice to have two monitors! Have had a dual monitor setup at work for years, and it's now hard to be productive without it ;-) Anyway, I just plug it in and it works (Dell Latitude 7370 running Fedora Workstation 30). Also works great on my Chromebook (Asus C302 Flip). NOTE: while it's true that the monitor just uses one cable for video and power, it will significantly reduce your laptop's battery life. I usually opt to plug my laptop in when using the monitor, so it's still a two cable setup..

I see in the old thread that someone suggested the Dell WD-15 Business Dock, and I can confirm that "just works" with Linux too. I visited one of our other offices and they were equipped with dual-monitors hooked up to WD-15 docks. That was a really great setup, and if I had room for a permanent office space at home I would use that.

The future is here!

So yes, you can do exactly that with usb-c, I think limited to 60w for a single device and 100w total.

Why not just travel with 2 portable monitors? I'm a monitor addict too, I have 5 27"s at home connected to an egpu. But it's just not practical on the road.

I think the clever solution is to realize we can retrain ourselves to use 3, 2, or even 1 screen.

I settled for just 1 extra screen b/c I think the productivity gained by each additional monitor sharply drops off. The one I got is thunderbolt 3, so only needs 1 cable for video and power. And it's bright enough while fits in any old laptop backpack.

I love this one better than my old usb3, which I see listed in the comments.

Thank you very much for the suggestion! Indeed, I don't really care that much about what OS is running on the machine, as long as it has a web browser. But my google-fu seems quite weak - all of the All-in-one PCs between 15" and 25" I found require mains power and seem to lack a battery. Can you mention one of the models you had in mind?

So far, the only alternative I found are some [USB-C monitors](
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y8SSQG5/ref=psdc_1292115011_t1_B0797SRSZC), which could be powered by a laptop. Quite expensive though, and not as easy to set up as the Galaxy View.

I have a GPU with DisplayPort output, and I'm thinking about getting a portable monitor so I can take the computer with me on the go. Most of the cheap, well-specced portable monitors I've found ONLY support video input via USB-C alt-mode (aka DisplayPort over USB-C).

Is there a way to convert the DP signal from my computer to USB-C alt-mode for input into a monitor? I've tried to search for such a thing but every result is a converter in the opposite direction (USB-C alt-mode output converted to DP).

I want to use something like this monitor: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y8SSQG5

I'd suggest the AOC I1601FWUX.

But I'd probably recommend just getting a notebook instead.

Can i use this USB-C monitor with my 2700x and Gigabyte x470 gaming 7?

u/Chobok0 · 1 pointr/thinkpad

My X1 has Thunderbolt ports as well, but PD standard requires minimum USB 2.0 cables, so you can go cheap if you're just going to charge with the cable. I'm using the Anker Powerline USB2.0 C-to-C 6ft cable with no issues.

Actually a cool thing I usually carry is a portable Thunderbolt monitor so I can dual-monitor on the go, so I usually have one of my C ports for charging and one cable to the monitor for power & display, and a Bluetooth mouse and I'm set anywhere I go.

That device translates the USB-C (USB 3.1 Rev1) to USB 3.0.

That's 10Gbps and lots of power vs 5G a limited amount of power (don't recall the wattages), if I recall.

For example, a friend of mine has one of these:

https://www.amazon.ca/AOC-i1601fwux-Extremely-Portable-1920x1080/dp/B06Y8SSQG5/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524022160&sr=8-1&keywords=AOC+i1601fwux+16-Inch+IPS+Extremely+Slim+USB-C+Powered+Portable+Monitor%2C+1920x1080+Res%2C+5ms%2C+Smart+Cover%2FStand

Right now, I can use it, but only when I'm on battery and it sucks a lot of juice.

If I could pass-through power, then I could use it while powered.

This adapter would probably make it not work.
